350 Rue Notre-Dame Est, Vieux-Montréal
Founded by Gianni Battista, we bring the warmth and tradition of a real Italian espresso bar to the cobblestone streets of Vieux-Montréal. No gimmicks — just honest coffee.
La Storia
Café de' Mercanti wasn't born from a business plan. It started with Gianni's obsession for doing espresso the right way — the way his family taught him in Italy. The kind of coffee that doesn't need flavoured syrups to taste good.
Walk in, and it feels like you've stepped into a neighbourhood bar in Rome. The machine hisses, the cups clink, regulars lean on the counter. That's how it should be. We have two locations now — Monkland Village and here in Vieux-Montréal — but the philosophy hasn't changed.
"Il caffè deve essere caldo come l'inferno, nero come il diavolo, puro come un angelo, dolce come l'amore."— Italian Proverb

"Finally, a café that doesn't drown everything in syrup. Just good, honest coffee in a beautiful space. Gianni clearly knows what he's doing."
"We stumbled in during a walk through Old Montreal and ended up staying two hours. The biscotti, the marocchino, the atmosphere — perfection."
"This is my reading spot. Great Wi-Fi, nobody rushes you, and the cappuccino is consistently perfect. I've been coming every week for a year."
